About Rev. Dr. Winfred M. Hope

When the best is in your presence, surely they must be presented. This is why many have called on Rev. Dr. Winfred M. Hope to be the featured Lecturer, Preacher and presenter at gatherings throughout this country.

God truly blessed Ebenezer when he sent Dr. Winfred M. Hope and his family to Ebenezer Baptist Church West on August 16, 1979. Since that time, Dr. Hope has demonstrated dynamic leadership and bold vision in the carrying out of God’s plan for His people. Before coming to Ebenezer, Dr. Hope served in various churches as an assistant pastor and as the pastor of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Cairo, Georgia for seven years.

Winfred M. Hope, born November 11, 1944, to the late Rev. Robert L. Hope, Sr. and Mrs. Zeola Hope (deceased) is a native of Mobile, Alabama. He received the Bachelor of Arts from Fort Valley State College, the Master of Divinity from Morehouse School of Religion, of the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia and the Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary, San Anselmo, California.

In 1998, Dr. Hope founded “Marks of Hope,” an organization designed to uplift, empower, and motivate persons through seminars, presentations, and published materials. His audiences describe him in these words: “For others, you have to hear them speak. For Dr. Hope, you have to see him speak.” Pastor Hope devotes much energy to the training of members; this is his ongoing commitment. He deeply believes that in order to serve, believers must be trained.

Presently, he serves as Dean of the Congress of Christian Education for the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia. Dr. Hope successfully established the following programs at Ebenezer: New Member Orientation, Mid-Week Worship services, leadership conferences and retreats for ministry groups, Bible study classes for children, teens and adults, fellowship dinners, music workshops open to the entire community, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies/Girl Scouts, Mission Disbursements for better service and aid to sick and shut-in members, Family At Church Time Wednesday Programs, and the foster parent program for University of Georgia students.

The Worship, Constitution, Budget and Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Transportation, Community Ministry Center were formed through his leadership. The positions of Church Administrator, Minister of Christian Education, Full and Part-Time Secretaries, Minister of Music, and Children’s and Youth Department Coordinators were added to the church staff by Pastor Hope. Members are more actively involved in all areas of church worship; attendance at Church School, Mid-week Worship and Bible Study, and Sunday morning worship service.

With unending faith and dynamic vision, Dr. Hope led Ebenezer West through the renovation project of the old sanctuary built in 1938, to a newly restored 2.2 million dollar sanctuary in August 2009.

He is married to the lovely Betty Smith Hope, formerly of Dublin, Georgia. Mrs. Hope is a retired Early Childhood teacher from the Clarke County School District. The support she gives to her husband’s ministry and Ebenezer enables Pastor Hope to maintain a demanding and challenging schedule.

Dr. and Mrs. Hope are the proud parents of two lovely daughters: Helen Yvonne (Marcus, son-in-law) Kimbrough, of Charlotte, North Carolina and Tracey Yvette Hope Haynes (Ulysses Haynes, son-in-law) of Birmingham, Alabama and the proud grandparents of Austin and Avery Kimbrough.

Truly God has blessed Ebenezer with such a wonderful pastor and family. The entire Athens and surrounding community has been blessed tremendously due to his generous gifts of his time, talents, and extraordinary leadership. The many visions Dr. Hope has of what Ebenezer can and will become in the future, have been set forth in a God designed and God ordained plan that will lead Ebenezer to higher heights and greater works for the Lord.
